Where It Began:
On May 1st, 1957, at 7:00am, E.V. Crutcher, from Frankfort, arrived at the Juniper Hill Golf Course pro shop, quickly paid his greens fee, and then teed off the #1 tee to become the first golfer to play the golf course on Opening Day. From that day forward golf in Frankfort, golf in Central Kentucky, and even golf across the entire Ohio Valley Region changed forever!
Juniper Hill quickly became one of the most popular golf courses in Kentucky. Designed and built by Buck Blankenship it hosted numerous statewide golf events including the Kentucky State High School Championships as well as numerous events and outings attracting golfers from literally all across Kentucky and even the United States.

Juniper Hill has also been the catalyst for stimulating an active group of junior golfers throughout the years. Beginning with Juniper’s first golf professional, Buck Blankenship, followed by Ernie Sampson, and then longtime Hall of Fame professional, Gene Hilen, junior golf has always been an important part of the golf program. Even today many former junior golfers enjoy visiting Juniper Hill and reminiscing about the “good old days” growing up at the ‘Hill!
There are also very active adult associations. The Juniper Hill Golf Association and The Juniper Hill Ladies Golf Club are two of the largest in the state of KY. The Women’s Thursday Night “Late Swinger’s League” combined with the “Wednesday Ladies league” produce an active and dedicated group of golfers. In addition to playing, the women volunteer for various social and tournament outings, and add to the quality of events held at Juniper Hill.
Each year close to 100 women volunteer their time and energy during the Governor’s Open in September; this event is always listed as one of the most enjoyable and competitive for top professional golfers and amateurs alike.
The Juniper Hill Golf Association (which hosts and conducts the Governor’s Open) consists of approximately 200 golfers who play in monthly events throughout the season. These events provide a competitive and social outlet for golfers on a regular basis. They foster camaraderie and fun for golfers of all ages and skill level. Additionally, the JHGA donates thousands of dollars annually to deserving local organizations.
As Juniper Hill nears 60 years of age it still retains a prominent place in the hearts of local golfers, Juniper Hill serves as a host for numerous golf outings which contribute over $200,000 each year to local charities. Further more, the “Hill” remains one of the most playable and popular golf facilities in the Commonwealth
