Where It Began:

Since its opening on May 1, 1957, Juniper Hill Golf Course has evolved from a local Frankfort gem into a cornerstone of Kentucky’s golfing landscape. The legacy began at 7:00 AM when E.V. Crutcher hit the inaugural tee shot, marking the start of a transformation for golf across the Ohio Valley.

Designed by Buck Blankenship, the “Hill” quickly gained a reputation for its playability and charm, eventually hosting prestigious events like the Kentucky State High School Championships. This success was built on a foundation of professional leadership—from Blankenship and Ernie Sampson to the legendary Gene Hilen—all of whom prioritized a thriving junior program that still draws former players back to reminisce today.

Beyond the fairways, Juniper Hill is defined by its vibrant community:

  • The Juniper Hill Golf Association (JHGA): With roughly 200 members, the JHGA fosters year-round camaraderie through monthly tournaments and oversees the highly competitive Governor’s Open each September.
  • Charitable Impact: The course serves as a powerful engine for local good, with various outings and the JHGA contributing over $200,000 annually to area charities.
  • The Juniper Hill Ladies Golf Club: Boasting some of the largest leagues in the state, including the “Late Swingers” and “Wednesday Ladies,” these women are the heartbeat of the course’s social and volunteer efforts.

Each year close to 100 women volunteer their time and energy during the Governor’s Open in September; this event is always listed as one of the most enjoyable and competitive for top professional golfers and amateurs alike.

The Juniper Hill Golf Association (which hosts and conducts the Governor’s Open) consists of approximately 200 golfers who play in monthly events throughout the season. These events provide a competitive and social outlet for golfers on a regular basis. They foster camaraderie and fun for golfers of all ages and skill level. Additionally, the JHGA donates thousands of dollars annually to deserving local organizations.

As Juniper Hill nears 60 years of age it still retains a prominent place in the hearts of local golfers, Juniper Hill serves as a host for numerous golf outings which contribute over $200,000 each year to local charities. Further more, the “Hill” remains one of the most playable and popular golf facilities in the Commonwealth.
